BMI & GLP-1 Eligibility
GLP-1 medications for weight management are typically prescribed for individuals with:
- ✓BMI of 30 or greater (obese), or
- ✓BMI of 27 or greater with at least one weight-related health condition (type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.)
BMI is one factor in determining eligibility. Your healthcare provider will consider your complete health profile when making prescribing decisions.
Understanding BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using your height and weight to estimate body fat. While it's a useful screening tool, it's important to understand its limitations.
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass, doesn't account for body composition, age, sex, or ethnicity, and may not accurately reflect health for athletes, elderly individuals, or those with certain body types.
That said, BMI remains a widely used clinical tool for initial assessment of weight-related health risks and is one of the criteria healthcare providers use when considering GLP-1 medication prescriptions.
If you're interested in GLP-1 therapy support regardless of your BMI result, we encourage you to reach out. Our therapists work with individuals at all stages of their weight management journey.
